I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore

Whoa, i thought maybe i might like this flick, it might be charming, but holy fuck, i wasn't expecting it to be this good. Simple story of a robbery victim wanting her shit back, only to have it turn in to a bloody great time. Elijah Wood is the shit in this and he gets great moments of badassery, even if it still seems wimpy. Melanie Lynskey gives a great performance here, the two together have great chemistry. THe effects are great, when violence happens, and usually by accident(at first) it is shocking, and humorous, then the final act goes all out with stabbings & shootings and it is glorious! The setting, tone, and music at the end reminded me alot of The Last House on the Left. THis is pure exploitation in the final act, the first half is indeed a charming anti rom com, but everything meshes together in a great way. Kudos to Macon Blair on his first feature!

Life

Damn, this was a great flick. Take a crew of folks from different backgrounds, put them on a ship outer space, then have an alien pick them off one by one. Sounds familiar? Yes, it sounds like Alien, and this film is possibly the closest film to Alien....since....Alien! This feel is atmospheric, it has amazing "long takes" whether it actually was a long take or they hid some takes, it still looks fantastic. The kills are great, and it helps from the tension that is built, and this whole film is a giant piece of high tension. These characters want to protect each other, they argue, but they have each others best interests in their hearts & minds, which is refreshing, as there isn't a antagonist in the group, no one gets greedy or have ulterior motives  It is just a crew, scared and alone against a vicious alien. This alien is great, starts off like a small plant, it grows into a slug, then gets this predator face, and this alien is indeed a predator, it sets out to kill, and killing is what it does. This is the best outer space film since Guardians, and it is way better than the pretentious ass sci fi we have been getting every fall for the past few years. The ending is awesome, i predicted it, but it was still a great ending to a great film.

Power Rangers

The Power Rangers i grew up with, i watched the original series & saw the first film in theatres. I Gave up after Mighty Morphin ended, but i still held the series in a great form of nostalgia. I remember going to Toys R Us and waiting to be let in, ad they had a special Power Rangers day, those toys were the shit! What was not to love? I loved, and still do love, Kaiju flicks, and this is what Power Rangers is at the core, it is Ultraman but with a team. I recently bought the first issue of the Power Rangers/Justice League cross over....and it was awesome, I also rewatched the original movie....and it is not. I had not watched it in probably 18 years, i have rewatched the show, and it is fine, hell, as i type this, i am binging some of them, 3 in as a matter of fact. No i am not going to watch them all, but fuck it, watch it since i just saw the new movie.....oh yes, the new movie. Well the original show, is stupid, really stupid, it is corny as fuck, but it has charm and the battles were awesome, a new movie is surely going to be the shit? Well, not exactly, it is dumb, but dumb like the show was, you roll your eyes, shake your head, but you have a blast doing so. This is not The Room level of so bad it is good, and it bad like X Men Apocalypse, no, it is not even bad, it is fine, it is just a dumb flick with some funny lines, and some cool moments, the Rita Nightmare scene is awesome! Alpha is the best part, surprisingly, as they made him some what witty and had a dry sense of humor. Kimberly & Trini were fucking HOT! Billy had his moments, it helps that RC Cyler, from Me & Earl & the Dying Girl is a damn good actor, the two female leads were good in their spunky roles and were quite HOT, i liked Zack, you felt for him in this, the Pink Ranger & the Yellow Ranger were fucking HOT, Jason wasn't a total douche like Cyclops or Leonardo, Naomi Scott & Becky G are fucking HOT! The battles could have been better, it felt like the end of the first Thor, but i dig that flick, so fuck it! I had a fun time with it, the mid credit stinger, sets up the sequel, you can guess what it is! THey easily could have done a GOOD version, in the realm of DC or Marvel, and they still could, some day, but for now we get this, and this is basically the series, so if you claim the movie raped your childhood, guess what, it had already been raped, as that wasn't very good either, so enjoy it for what it is, a dumb flick with monsters....well sort of!

Iron Fist

Iron Fist i was stoked for, a kung fu MCU, fuck yeah! It had to be more intriguing than Jessica Jones, had to be better than Luke Cage, and could it top Daredevil, or DD's second season? No it did not top either season of Daredevil, it is on par with Jones I suppose, but that series had a stronger villain. The action scenes here are better for sure, but like most modern TV shows, it gets dull in the middle. They should book these shows like a trilogy, meaning 9 episodes instead of 12. Where in the first three episodes are the first movie, the next three are the second movie, and the final three is the final film. Instead we get a stretched out drama filled with legal matters, uninteresting corporate douches and lots of happenstance. The first episode is awesome, the next few were still good, but once you get to the middle four episodes are boring, the last few get really contrived, almost as if they were writing it as they went along. Which is fine, if you know your ending, but this felt like someone playing with their action figures but they are getting bored while playing with them, and decides to bring in other toys. However this show needed other toys, it should have had more connection to the Defenders, plant those seeds. I feel that the twelfth episode should have been the last one, but the true finale did tie up the lose ends, in a fast way, a way that should have been done episodes earlier but instead we got some boring legal shit. Moving on, the finale wasn't bad, it ended a lot, brought up ideas for either season 2, or hopefully Defenders, as it seems the bit at the end between Davos & Joy seemed to refer to Stick, i am stoked for Defenders, but mainly out of my love of Daredevil!

Beauty & The Beast

As far as Disney's live action remakes go, The Jungle Book is still the best, but in terms of princess remakes, this reigns supreme. This film looks great, the cinematography, set design, costuming, & music are all early contenders for the Oscars. I loved LaLa Land, but as you might know, Emma Watson was supposed to be in that film, now I LOVE Emma Stones, but I think Watson does a better job in the signing department. A lot are complaining that it is too much of a remake of the cartoon, and well...no shit, it is, who gives a fuck? Enjoy it, it is a damn good film!

The Belko Experiment

Well now, critics that are hating this must not be fans of the horror genre or trash cinema. This is a B Movie, Exploitation, a big budget Troma film. James Gunn has his stamp on this, even if it just is in the writing. The music is amazing, the characters you can relate with, the gore is awesome, the script is funny & intense at the same time. Take Office Space, mix in Battle Royal, with a little bit of the Experiment(the Adrian Brody flick) and you have The Belko Experiment. This isn't Split or anything groundbreaking, it is familiar but that is okay, i just wanted a fun flick, with good kills and this is perfectly paced, it is under 90 minutes, they could have extended it a bit but in the short time they develop the characters that are the hunters and which ones you want to see live. This is a future cult classic for sure!

Love Season 2

Damn, what a brutal show. I was late to the party last year, but binged season 2 in the past day, it is far superior to the first season, and i loved the first season. As i have said Apatow does TV better than film, and this shows it. The first season was lighter while being real, this one was heavy at times. He is a cringe worthy nice guy, she is a bitch, but they click, holy fuck i wouldn't want to be friends with either but sadly i would befriend both. Damn, now to wait another 12 months, fucking binge watching shows. Oh well, beats losing interest week to week.

Workaholics

It is kind of sad that this show has ended, it started off as your basic Comedy Central series, but it soon became their It's Always Sunny, it then launched not just a cult following but a legit following. The stars have gone on tho have careers, especially Adam Devine. The show ended on a great note, one of the best seasons they had, the second to final episode could have been the finale, but it wasn't structured to be, the final episode is basically a what happens after episode, and it plays the notes perfectly!

Moonlight

Well i finally saw Moonlight, and it was definitely better than Arrival and Manchester By Sea but it was not as good as LaLa Land, Hell or High Water or Hacksaw Ridge. It was brilliantly crafted, and was gripping, however, i found some of the shots, especially the close ups to be rather cliche. All the acting was great, but none deserved awards. I loved the structure, it reminded me of A Place Beyond the Pines, and i adore the themes, but i feel that the Academy and all the other award shows only rewarded this film, because they felt they had to.

Kong: Skull Island....spoilers

The trailers were great, each one topped the last, but i feared the film would suck? Did it? Hell no, it was pretty awesome? Was it better than the original? Hell no, was it better than Peter Jackson's? Hell no, but it was better than 76 and its sequel. The cast is having a great time, and i highly enjoyed the characters, John C. Reilly steals the show, he is great in this! The story, is pretty much a man on a mission flick, set to look like Apocalypse Now, the imagery, the soundtrack, the tone of the soldiers, it all fits! The soundtrack, i should mention, is great, it compliments the entire flick. Now this flick is about King Kong, and he looks great in this! The other monsters all do aswell, they even throw in a giant bug scene, bugs freak me out, it wasn't quite as effective as the Jackson bugs but it still looked cool. I loved the backstory of Reilly's characters and the natives. The battles were all well done, but the best part is after the credits. the stinger, holy hell! Now i wasn't a big fan of the last American Godzilla but showing him, Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah, made me super fucking stoked! Bring on the Kaijus! Bring on Pacific Rim! I am stoked!

It's Always Sunny & Man Seeking Woman

FXX is the shit, It's Always Sunny, keeps getting better & better every single year. This year is hd classic episodes of the gang getting into trouble and being all around cocks, however it also had some of the sweetest moments in the shows run. It is paired perfectly with Man Seeking Woman, a show that combines creepiness, cringe worthy moments, with raw & sadness aswell as super bizarre & surreal aspects.

Before I Fall

The only reason i saw this, is because i had a similar concept, and much like Click, my brilliant concept was a let down upon being made before i could. This however is way better than Click, it is just a rather bland film, there is a brilliant film in here somewhere but it is sadly rather Young Adult washed. Hopefully the era of Twilight/Hunger Games is dead, and folks will make darker tones, cause this film could use a darker tone.

Logan

It is no secret that with the exception of the Guardians of the Galaxy, that i prefer the X Men films to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. X Men came out when i was in the 6th grade, it blew me away, i had been wanting to see these characters on the big screen for years, hell i would have been excited even if it was straight to video, and i loved it. X Men 2 was better on every level, and set the new standard for superhero films, until Christopher Nolan came along with a story of a man dressed as a bat. X Men 3 sucked, but never fear, we were going to get a stand alone Wolverine prequel.....and it was worse that X Men 3. Luckily Mathew Vaughn did First Class, which was my favorite X Men film for 6 years....hmm, wonder what is now? That set the films on a new course, which included The Wolverine, one of the most underrated superhero films ever made, and of course Days of Future Past wrapped everything up nicely.....oh wait, there was another one? Fuck Apocalypse. Oh you meant the one before that, Deadpool, well okay! Now, as i said, First Class, was my favorite, now it is Logan, holy fuck, this is a superhero masterpiece. The acting is great, the directing, the sets, the gore, the score, everything! This was a perfect swan song, and a rather sad one at that! For 17 years, Patrick Stewart & Hugh Jackman have been with us, and now for them to wrap up their portion of the series, it is bitter sweet. I could care less if we get a fourth prequel, honestly they should have left it as just two of them. I don't want a fourth main time line, especially since the end of Days of Future Past, showed us the X Men on the right track, and no, we don't need a bridge film between that and this, somethings are best left to the imagination. IF we do get a bridge showing why there are no longer any more mutants, then please let it be in Deadpool 2 or 3.....speaking of which. Since it looks like Deadpool may use time travel with Cable, have them go to 2029, and instead of having X Men 2099, have X Men 2029, because this film gives us a bunch of new mutants to play with. The original trilogy, is over, the prequels are over, the Wolverine films are over. Do 2 more Deadpool flicks, but also if Fox wants to milk the franchise, do a New Mutants or something. Hell when it is all said and done, fox could have 15 films in a 30 year span in this world, and i am all for it. Then please give the rights back to Marvel, and Marvel, let the franchise stay dead for a decade, don't pull a Batman that Dawn of Justice did, let characters retire....for a while. Then you have my blessing to reboot it, but if you do, it wont pack the same punch, nothing will, 17 years, 9 films, it is unheard of for an actor to play a character that many times in so many years with out being recast. Thank you Hugh Jackman, for all your years, thank you as well to Patrick Stewart, you are both fantastic, and both of them did some of their best acting ever in this flick. It has blood, it has laughs, it has heart. I love this franchise, and this is the best of the bunch!
