Sabrina: Season 3

The first season of Sabrina was awesome. It came out in the Halloween season, it was Halloween themed, it had great nods to horror films and was an overall fun show. Season 2 began to feel more CW esque bu found itself toward the end. Season 3 amps the CW teen soap feel but adds in super cringe worthy "musical numbers". It was still fun at times but mind numbing more often than not. Pretty much all the antagonists work on the show, so they are the real positives. No more crap songs in season 4, and lighten up on the teen drama, go back to the basics.

The Good Place

The Good Place filled the void left by Community. Not only a void of a great sitcom on network TV, but a void of a sitcom that didn't try to be a drama, but more importantly a void left as a bonkers series not on a plane of reality. While NBC has produced several great sitcoms, The Office, Parks & Rec, Seinfeld(the best sitcom ever), and Community(my favorite sitcom ever), The Good Place was one that didn't have a weak spot, every season was great, and it didn't go on longer than it needed to. The finale was so forking good, so many emotions, a combination of joy & sadness, touching in so many ways and tied together several minor threads. This show will be missed.

The Turning

The Turning is a film with many ideas, good ideas, some cliche ideas, but overall good horror ideas that just totally missed the mark. The script is, as i mentioned, cliched but it is also such a clusterfuck of those ideas that it clutters up into a film where you don't really care for any characters, because each character seems to be only to be used as a pawn for whatever scene they need done next. I'll say one thing it has some what the fuck moments, but the execution of this film does not work at all.

The Gentlemen

Remember the early 00s? Remember thinking Guy Ritche was the shit? Remember loving Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch? Remember Guy Ritchie got Madonna's snatch and then directed Swept Away and it was crap? Then he tried to go back to his roots with Revolver and RockNRolla  before settling on mediocre blockbusters? Well now he went back to his roots again, but this time he might have just directed his best film! Sharp script, snappy dialogue, great acting, awesome violence, this is the Ritchie i have been wanting! So far with this and Underwater 2020 is off to a great start. With this we get a both a stylish crime film but a perfect dry comedy.

Underwater

William Eubank impressed me with Love almost 10 years ago, then everyone jizzed over the Signal, which was a bit underwhelming. His latest, Underwater, is pretty fucking awesome. From the very start of the film we are in the main plot, a little over 90 minutes later and it doesn't let up. I have always found the sea to be fascinating, even scary just because we can send a man to the moon but not to the bottom of the ocean, this film tackles that. It is hardly the first to do so but it is refreshing to have a film like this in theatres. Take a working class crew from The Thing of Alien, set it underwater, have em face off with Lovecraftian creatures and toss in more Alien moments  and you have a solid film. It doesn't try to be anything more than what it gives us, and i got exactly what i wanted, and it isn't just Kristen Stewart's wardrobe.

1917

1917 might just have topped Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as the best film of 2019. This could very well be the best war film since Saving Private Ryan. Sam Mendes has crafted his masterpiece. This dethrones American Beauty as his best, aswell as Jarhead as my favorite of his. Such precision went in to crafting this film to look like one take, i kept trying to find the hidden cuts, i am sure i know where they were but yowie wowie they were masked perfectly.  The acting and score are both wonderful, and the pacing is fantastic, especially for a film like this. The imagery is haunting, and at times disturbing as it depicts the horrors of war. This is an intense film, and it is truly deserving of all the awards.

The Grudge

Ju On i always found to be one of the weaker J Horror films. I don't mind it but i have never loved it. The Grudge meanwhile was one of the more decent J Horror remakes of the 00s(fuck a duck, almost twenty years ago), but that isn't saying much as most were lackluster. When it comes to lackluster the new new remake of the Grudge takes the cake. Gone are the subtleties and jump scares and instead we welcome attempted jump scares and images that think they are grotesque. First new film of 2020 and it is off to a shitty start. Oh well atleast horror is plentiful this year to make up for this.

Lucky Day

Roger Avary is back! If you loved the Pulp Fiction inspired films of the 90s & early 00s then you'll dig this, and it especially works with Pulp writer Avary helming this film. This is by no means perfect, far from it, but it is a return to the days of Killing Zoe but with the style of the Rules of Attraction! Bloody as fuck, funny and super slick.
