South Park Season 26

South Park Season 26 was a mixed bag, it wasn't bad but it was not very memorable. The finale kinda saved it but i feel this season proved that Try Parker & Matt Stone should focus in on the Paramount Plus Specials.

John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick: The Warriors continues the tradition of upping the ante in terms of kills & stunt work, and it also further makes this the best action franchise there is in terms of pure action and artistry. These films are gorgeous and the set design always goes overlooked, these films are masterpieces in lighting and ooze visual style. Here we get a classic wrestling tale of "nothing personal, it's just business" but by way of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly featuring John Wick vs Donnie Yen playing heel Matt Murdoch. I hate that it is trendy to creative universes for films but this did alot of world building with new characters and some Mandalorian esque lore.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods

Shazam: Fury of the Gods is getting so much hate but it seems to be from two camps, people either comparing it to MCU or people pissed that James Gunn took over DC. Enough is enough when it comes to the tribalism, just enjoy comic flicks for what they are, and what this offers is a fun film with lots of heart and some genuinely awesome fantasy/horror elements. When it comes to the future of DC, this film acts as both a finale to the Snyderverse and it gives a glimpse of what could come in troGunnVille.

Leave

Shudder does it again, they take an interesting yet somehow tired premise, make it look nice but drain it of any depth. It starts off intriguing but really drags in the middle the last act finally adds tension but by that point it feels like we watched two or three different films rolled into one. It's overly long and boring, like most films from Shudder or this supernatural genre it feels unmemorable.

The Last of Us

I never played the Last of Us game but the series is a great piece of survival horror. There is a slow burn of character development, some tense moments and great effects. The third episode, featuring Nick Offerman & Murray Bartlett is one of the best episodes of any series, it almost felt like a short film. The rest carried alot of heart as the leads grew closer as they left plenty of blood behind.

Poker Face

Poker Face feels so Rian Johnson, it's like a Knives Out series but with a murder of the week, a murder of the week that is solved in the first 10 minutes, cross that with David Banner and we get a new odd ball career of the week. It's a fresh take on episodic TV all while having a underlining thread supported by guest stars.

Scream 6

Scream 6 is pretty fucking great. After Radio Silence took over i had their fifth film ranked close with part 2 and 4 from Craven, but this slashes them all. The story is tighter, the kills are more brutal, and the tension is thick. It might be the longest in the series but it flies by, the pacing is terrific as is the post credit scene. Like the rest of the series it has some contrived moments but it always works in these films. I can't wait for a seventh entry. This felt like it breathed new life into the series and is an excellent slasher.

Creed 3

I love the entire saga but Creed 3 might be one of the best. Michael B. Jordan knocks it out as director and with the exception of a very odd bit of CGI the film looked incredible. It oozes style and even has bits of surrealism tossed in,  Being Rockyless didn't harm it at all as the fights are great and the story has heart. As always the case the entire cast is great but Jonathan Majors easily gives us the best foe in a Rocky/Creed film since Ivan Drago.

Back to the Drive In

Back to the Drive In is a poignant yet hopeful slice of americana. Showing the rise and fall of the drive ins during the pandemic we see how much of a team effort there is and the families that struggle to keep the drive in alive. I wish it had shown a bit more on the fanbase and love of seeing cinema in such a setting but this isn't about the films or fans, it's about small business and the hustle it takes to survive!

House Party

House Party had a mediocre trailer and looked like a pointless remake, pointless but not untouchable. It starts off by the numbers yet still funny, loses a bit of steam then goes batshit crazy for a while before having a come down period. The come down period attempts to tie everything together but does it too quickly. Any form of dire straights is resolved within minutes but i had a good time with it. It feels like a film that would have played on Comedy Central back in the day, dumb, funny and honestly for a stoner flick that is all you need.

Spoonful of Sugar

Spoonful of Sugar is a visceral sexual thriller, and one that is cringey(on purpose) but it feels hollow. I believe this films thinks it is super deep, and it could be but the characters are despicable(again intentionally) but for a film about a fucked up girl staying with a narcistic family you kind of want someone to get behind. The end credits hints at a better film, or atleast it made me wish i had an ah-ha moment.

Cocaine Bear

Elizabeth Banks i figured could do outlandish humor, which Cocaine Bear has. I figured she could possibly do dark humor, which Cocaine Bear has. But doing full on gore i did not expect. The trailer for Cocaine Bear teased an insane time, but the film exceeded that. This is a blast from the first line til the last, i mean the first minute til the last. Fast paced, gory and full of splat stick humor. At time it feels like Tromaville, or even a well crafted SyFy original and honestly for a killer animal flick, that is all you should want.
