Picard

Picard is easily the best Star Trek series since Deep Space 9, if not even The Next Generation. Sure it has a bit of JJ's lens flare but this honestly feels more cinematic than the last few films(by no means a knock on those flicks). It has the classic smarts of Trek shows, a lot of heart, action, and great nods to various entrees in franchise. If this is the end for Picard, Riker, and Data then it is a better farewell than Nemesis.

Guns Akimbo

Guns Akimbo, Jason Lei Howden's follow up to Deathgasm, ups the ante and adds more drugs, more gore & more chaos for his second outing. What we get is a neon colored line of coke that doesn't let up for nearly the entire film. Daniel Radcliffe continues to have the most amazing post Potter career with the most oddball choices in film and TV, Samara Weaving continues to be the most bad ass babe in the game today, hell i want a marathon of this, The Babysitter, Mayhem, and Ready or Not. The film is bonkers and is reminiscent of Crank and Hobo with a Shotgun with a good dash of social commentary.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10

The tenth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm might be their best since the first few seasons. Each episode this year was hilarious, amazing throw backs, jokes with great pay offs and Larry David was as despicable as ever.  It's rare to find a comedy this fucking brilliant and this funny, especially after 20 years.

Big Time Adolescence

Big Time Adolescence is a fantastic coming of age film. In the vein of Kids or Mid 90s it shows teens going through shit and running into trouble, but more so than those films this here has so much heart. Characters have depth and aren't always perfect, you can see hating these people yet also see being friends with them. Pete Davidson truly arrives in this film, before this i liked him but wasn't sold on him, now i want to see more of him..even if his character might just be himself. The rest of the cast is great too, and for a first time feature film this is a impressive effort. If you are stuck at home and have Hulu, put aside 90 minutes and check this out!

Spenser Confidential

If there wasn't a pandemic would i have still watched Spenser Confidential? Maybe. If it wasn't storming out would i have watched it? Maybe. If it wasn't on Netflix would i have seen it in theatres? With AMC? Well maybe. I'm not a Peter Berg mark, but i do enjoy Very Bad Things....unfortunately Spenser is a very bad thing. Had this gone to theatres i think i'd feel the same, cheated out of time by a film that feels like it wants to be a Michael Bay flick. This is a pure mess of a film in every form. Wooden acting, cheap jokes, choppy action, tired script, and it really feels forced and unneeded, a true waste of 2 hours.

Pokemon:Mewtwo Strikes Back

The new Netflix Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, shares alot of plot with Pokemon: The First Movie and even a plot point of Detective Pikachu. Even as cringe as some moments of First Movie were, this film still fails to compare to that(and last years awesome aforementioned Detective Pikachu). The CGI bits trying to look anime just looked odd. The film felt clunky, but it is for kids. Hopefully if we don't catch Covid we can catch a new live action film in a couple years.

Avenue 5

Avenue 5 is the show I wanted the Orville to be. It's more Deep Space 9 than original series with a dash of Lost in Space. Good humor and good sense of doom, with a great cast that operates both dynamics.

Bloodshot

I remember reading Bloodshot 20 some years ago, i remember digging it even though i don't remember much of it. I was glad to see Valiant making their way into cinema though and figured Bloodshot would be a fine first outing. Even if the trailer looked so so i was glad to see a non Marvel or DC property getting cinematic exposure. The film itself feels very early to mid 00s, not a terrible thing, but feels like a product of its time but 15 years later. If you ever thought to yourself, i'd love to see a low rent love child of Terminator Genisys and Iron Man 3 then this is the film for you(that totally wouldn't go over in marketing). The film is cut and dry, it doesn't try to be anything other than what it presents and what it presents definitely isn't boring. See you in 2021 Vin Diesel!

Swallow

Swallow is a weird film, not tonally but it is weird to digest. It is well made, but ultimately the film feels pointless. I wish it had pushed the envelope a bit more in the plot but i respect the balls it had in the final act. The end will stir controversy for sure and that alone is worth checking out. The idea of the film is great but it feels better suited as a short film.

The Hunt

After being postponed last September, The Hunt, has finally hit theatres. What we get is a great combo of well timed satirical humor, fantastic gore and a super fast paced horror film. Was it worth being taken out of 2019 for the political subtext? Well it is definitely there the entire film but honestly it pokes fun at both sides of the spectrum. Even if you don't give two shits about politics you can still easily enjoy this just for the blood alone. It's a bit more of a satire than the Purge, a bit bloodier too but if you enjoy those then this would play well with them. If you have seen the trailer then you have seen the plot but the effects and humor help carry this!

The Way Back

Gavin O'Connor excels at sport films, Warrior and Miracle prove that, but The Way Back might be his most powerful. At times it is tough to watch, and really hits hard with the characters personal lives. There is depth to not just Ben Affleck's character but even his team. Minor moments have pay offs and they come of age. This isn't your typical underdog story though, while it is an inspirational sports film it isn't all happy go lucky. The Accountant is still my favorite film of Gavin's but this might be his best. The trailers make it look pretty cookie cutter but he crafted a film that at one moment makes you feel joy and the next forces you to feel pain.

Extra Ordinary

Extra Ordinary is a gem! It has alot of classic European humor, nods to 70s horror, and some cool VHS bits. Pretty much a no name casts(except Will Forte) makes a great impression here with perfectly timed quips, absurd jokes and adding heart into the mix. It's not afraid to pull the rug on situations and never takes itself too seriously. For debut feature filmmakers, they knocked it out with this one!

Onward

I'll be honest I am not a huge Pixar follower, besides the Toy Story & Monsters INC movies, i have not seen an original Pixar film since Brave. Besides Toy Story the only other one i'm a big fan of is Up. Onward had a decent trailer but it looked like a Dreamworks Animation film, which was a good thing, it looked different from normal Pixar fare. Then once i found out there would be a Simpsons short i was sold on seeing it. The Simpsons short was a fun silent movie inspired Maggie tale, as for Onward...it was alot of fun. This is a cool flick, i had a great time with it, it actually makes me want to catch up on Pixar films i missed once i re subscribe to Disney Plus(after Falcon & Winter Soldier debuts). If you're a fantasy fan, or a WoW/D&D player you might really dig this, if you don't play them, neither do it, you still might dig this but it seems to be right up D&D fans alley. It's cliche to say Pixar films have heart but this film really did. Good humor, cool fantasy/adventure elements, nice surprise of a flick.
