Out There Halloween Mega Tape

Almost a decade ago I watched one of the brightest gems in not just Halloween movies, not just horror, but in film in general, Chris LaMartina's WNUF Halloween Special. Great concept, a recorded VHS with a local news special in the 80s covering a haunted house on Halloween night, complete with fake commercials for businesses and movies. Now we get the sequel Out There Halloween Mega Tape. Take the same concept, but the local news special is in the 90s covering a cult and UFOs on Halloween night, still complete with the fake commercials. It goes by fast, has alot of funny moments with it's tongue firmly planted in cheek and offers alot for those of us that watched all the alien/UFO specials on Fox in the 90s. Even if it takes another 10 years i would love for LaMartina to give us a third film.

Watcher

Watcher is one of the more suspenseful films on Shudder. It is beyond Shudder, it is IFC Midnight/Shudder so it carries a bit more prestige and rightfully so. Maika Monroe yet again knocks it out, playing yet another strong female in a tense horror film. Hitchcockian at times it builds paranoia, creepy vibes, and isolation and delivers an ending that it bleak yet perfect.

Shark Side of the Moon

Shark Side of the Moon, the new Asylum shark film on Tubi, has alot of the trademarks of older Asylum shark flicks. It is dumb, fun, has a non sensical plot, a bad boy(who is kind of forgotten about) but it almost feels like parody. It is the most jumbled of the Asylum shark movies and that is saying something. For a free flick, you can't go wrong, but i'm glad i didn't build my night around this on SyFy.

Eradication

Eradication doesn't look like a bad movie, in fact it really isn't.  There are indeed some creepy moments in the film but ultimately it shows that in this day & age anything can be released. This is way better than most screener crap, and other films that are viewed at festivals but with so many services it is good to have these films for content. Downside is that money goes no where. Now Tubi is picking up indie titles, much like Shudder does, unlike Netflix that is usually financing their own films. It is over saturation for sure which is good and bad, good for the creative outlet, bad as it burns people out on wanting to watch more. I wish this here had been a Shudder title, which Tubi does have a better back catalogue atleast Shudder originals get some form of attention. While this does have slow pacing it is still better paced & edited.....and acted and directed.....than most Shudder titles.

So Vam

Alot of people complain about movies being "too woke". I never do but if any film felt that way.....it would not be So Vam. If anything this film feels like a parody of "woke cinema". From the characters to their cancel culture conversations. The horror feels very mid to late 00s, awful acting and all. So Vam bad.

The Day After Halloween

I have way too many unwatched screeners but The Day After Halloween was one i needed to watched. Just plain needed it for some Halloween goodness. It is set in a drive in and is a comedy about some slackers, what can go wrong? EVERYTHING. The first 5 minutes is rough, but then we get to the drive in, it is quite choppy and has alot of audio issues but i was having a blast with it. That lasted about 10 minutes. After that it becomes confusing as the plot hops around with this bizarre time clock device, characters are introduced that serve no purpose and the characters we are stuck with are unlikable cunts. We enter a horror story and see flashes of imagination(characters imagination i should say) and it boils to a vampire angle that never really gets off the ground....it just sort of ends.....THE END, no more movie. The jokes are awful, the acting is wooden, the camera is static as fuck, the writers probably say as fuck.....wait a sec.....But yeah, it is bad but i was not bored. Great concept just needed better....everything.

The Innocents

The Innocents on Shudder looks great, technically is is beautiful, has great acting, an interesting story and is tremendously edited. Think New Mutants only good. It is a lil poorly paced and could have been trimmed quite a bit. It lags a bit in the middle, if 20 minutes had been cut then the flow would have been better and ultimately would have been that more enjoyable.

Glorious

Glorious, the film where J.K. Simmons plays a glory hole.....yes you read that right, is definitely not the film i expected it to be. Not that it is a bad thing, in fact it is better than it should be. I expected a slap sticky Troma esque film that happened to star an A lister. Instead we get a pretty bleak and fucked, albeit gross out at times film that thinks it is more philosophical than it truly is. Great vibe and trippy imagery but ultimately it's as worthless as a hole in the wall.

I Am Groot

It isn't fair to judge I Am Groot. It is a series of five shorts, each under 5 minutes, with the misadventures of Groot. It is not the Baby Groot series we needed post Guardians 2, but it serves in the grand scheme of the shorts Disney is known for. If these played before a movie, i'd be happy.

Pleasure

Pleasure is a raw and honest look at the trials & tribulations of the porn industry. Well acted, sexy, tense and at times humorous. It is pretentious and tedious at times but it always feels authentic. It shows the ups & downs, the struggles, the fame and the backstabbing that happens. There are alot of cameos for any fan of pornographic cinema to get behind and if you're not a porn mark, maybe you will find some new stars to fantasize over. I really wish i had seen this in theatres.

Shark Bait

It's been a few years since SyFy has done their shark movie originals, now it seems Saban Films and The Asylum have moved distribution to Tubi. The only Tubi original i have previously seen was the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, so this is their first film outing for me. Like most shark movies, it is terribly acted and dumb, but unlike most, this here just is not fun. There is a innovative shark kill but that is about all this has going for it. Sometimes in horror you love seeing douche bag characters get killed, but here you are stuck with these insufferable characters with hardly any shark action.

Day Shift

Day Shift is a fun as fuck, fast paced, action packed vampire film with heart. It's dumb as fuck but it's warm and innovative. Some of the vampire effects are pretty sweet and the kills pack a punch. The cast seems to be having fun, and in turn the viewer should as well. This isn't Near Dark, no go in expecting vampire greatness, but it is a blast to watch and finally a much needed win for Netflix.

Bullet Train

Bullet Train is one of the most fun flicks this year. Stylish, action packed, full of snappy dialogue delivered by cast that is having fun and chewing scenery. It is very much inspired by Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and Guy Ritchie. Meta, non linear, few awesome cameos, great build up for a final showdown. Sure the plot is contrived and character reasonings are a McGuffin but it is perfect for a film like this, it isn't trying to be anything it is not, it's just pure fun.

They/Them

Slashers are my favorite genre, i am also a huge ally of the LGBTQ community so i was interested in They/Them. It being on Peacock was a bid sign. I love Peacock, i love WWE, but their original films/shows, are to be desired. This film, is that. It feels like a parody, like a parody trailer but stretched to feature length. Nonsensical plot, wooden acting, laughable kills. Do you want to use your pronouns? If it is like this film, then hell no.

What Josiah Saw

Kudos to Shudder for releasing a film that actually looks great, and has damn fine acting. Sadly it is not to perfection, it comes off pretentious at times and it is quite dull, but there are scenes of excellence with visceral images, but they are far & few between.

Lightyear

So i love Toy Story, 2 & 3 are super depressing and 4 is great way to wrap it up, plus the Halloween special is sweet. Buzz Lightyear has had spin offs in the past with a cartoon series but now he has his pwn film, the film that was Andy's favorite movie which made him want to Buzz figure. The film's humor mostly does not work except for Sox. THe sci fi & action is entertaining enough and there is plenty of heart but like most Pixar films the story wasn't there for me. It is enjoyable for sure but best to not build universes around these characters.

Prey

Prey is probably the best crafted in the Predator saga since the first. I still would rank Predators and The Predator above it but is is a toss up with 2, I feel this looks better but that has a better vibe. Both are balls to the wall, especially this. It is beyond action packed from start to finish and the setting and characters are unique to this series plus it has a decent amount of gore plus the new look for the Predator is pretty sweet.

Allegoria

Allegoria is a film i figured would have buzz, directed by Powerman 5000's SPider One, aka Rob Zombie's brother, it landed on Shudder with little fan fare. It looks almost shot on video, which i don't mind, but this has some of the worst acting, dialogue and kills on not just Shudder, not just horror, but film in general. This is like an early 2010's screener, or a 00's straight to video film. Pure garbage. Is it an anthology film? Is is a satire? It is hard to tell, it is just a mess.  Scout Taylor Compton tries but that segment is so poorly paced that it almost feels added in, hell this entire film feels like random shorts thrown together.
