Barbarian

I wasn't aware of Barbarian until i saw it was playing at San Diego Comic Con. Upon looking it up, the plot was not really known. Then the trailer arrived, and it didn't really give alot away. This is how more films should be in terms of marketing. Send people in blind, and if you are planning to see this in theatres or on HBO Max this week, go in as blind as possible. This is a journey, atmospheric as fuck, tense, dark & twisted. Wish i had seen it in theatres, this is the type of great horror that is perfect for that setting.

VHS 99

VHS 99 starts off a bit more like a MTV driven WNUF. Disenfranchised teens doing Jackass shit while exploring and then horror shit happens.....then we get sorority girls being bitches, a game show full of depravity, some douchey ass skaters and annoying occultists. This could have been a recipe for greatness but instead the plots are bland, the horror is repetitive and the characters are despicable.

Black Adam

Black Adam is probably DCEU's messiest film. The plot doesn't really make sense, characters pop up and then it feels we are supposed to see growth, the editing is chaotic. With that said, it is quite enjoyable, it has some decent cameos, and some cool horror moments. The Justice Society is honestly for me the best part, i would have rather seen these characters come together and have their own film first. The end sets up some future DCEU projects, and while i'm all for it i still wish DCEU would focus in more on James Gunn's characters.

Bodies Bodies Bodies

A few weeks ago i watched Sissy, a film from Shudder about an influencer killing other influencers. I said it felt like they were trying to spoof influencers all while being done to justify them. Bodies BOdies Bodies is another influencer slasher and it has the same issues, only amped up. You'd expect with this being A24 and not Shudder, that it would be artsy, but no...this is just insufferable. Dark sets, obnoxious characters, no good kills, a choppy script. Atleast it ends on  a humorous note.

Grimcutty

Take Babadook, take away all the artsy aspects, add in memes.....yes memes.....that is the Grimcutty. This is a dull, wooden, and contrived film. Alot of Hulu originals are pretty bland looking, but some atleast are worth a watch, this here is just bad. Hulu just needs to fold in to Disney Plus. Keep an adult section for Solar Opposites and the FX shows.

The Curse of Bridge Hollow

Netflix' later Halloween offering The Curse of Bridge Hollow, is a step up from Hubie Halloween but a step down.....way down from the non Netflix Spirit Halloween, and that flick is not ranked too high, but it is topical. As far as Jeff Wadlow goes....well it might be his weakest.....and that is saying something. The humor is awful here, the characters are beyond dated, the plot feels forced(this is why i brought up Spirit as it shares a theme in plot....only it worked for Spirit), and the whole post modern Halloween vibe just feels like a Buzzfeed article. Horror on streaming services seem to be catered at the crowd that grew up on horror on the Disney Channel. This is essentially that but with "adult humor"

Mr. Harrigan's Phone

Stephen King adaptations are a mixed bag, Netflix films, especially horror are a mixed bag. Stephen King Netflix adaptations......well they too can be a mixed bag. Mr. Harrigan's Phone is a film that is not bad technically, it is well made but the acting is wooden, the characters are cliched and the plot is dull. I almost forgot about this but decided to give it a try. It is just as forgettable as trying to remember to watch it.

Halloween Ends

There are plenty of head scratching moments in Halloween Ends. It is quite non sensical and the more it goes the messier it gets, but i dug this flick. It takes elements that could have been used in previous films and puts em to use, it takes moments from others that didn't work and tries to make them work. Not everything here sticks but let's face it, many of us have watched plenty of slasher sequels that we cherish that are total crap. This tries to do something new for the saga and has some gnarly kills.  I get why this film is polarizing but people nitpick too much for a franchise with 5 canons!

Dark Glasses

While i have admired Dario Argento since i was a teen, i have never  held him as an icon for myself. I LOVE Suspiria, it is gorgeous & atmoshperic. Most of his work from the 70s & 80s is, i even enjoy alot of his 90s films, but i feel that was the last decade where he felt like Argento. The 00s i felt it was style over substance but that style fell flat with Dracula ten years ago. Now we get Dark Glasses and while it is sexy at times, and has some Argento blood, it is boring as fuck, non sensical and feels like someone TRIED to make a film inspired by Argento.

She Will

She Will, the latest from IFC Midnight/Shudder has a great atmosphere, a strong feminist vibe and some cool sleep paralysis imagery makes for a well crafted witch tale.  It is slow as fuck however, the pacing and exposition are dull but the flashes of witchery are quite beautiful. I'm glad Malcom McDowell is doing a bit more respectable work again but it still feels very post Halloween.

Beavis & Butthead

The 2011 reboot of Beavis & Butthead was quite lackluster, but the 2022 version on Paramount Plus is a worthy follow up to the MTV series of the 90s and the films. The humor is dumb yet brilliant but all around hilarious.

She Hulk

She Hulk is beyond terrible, why did i keep watching? Cause of my love of the MCU. I love the MCU but this is awful, i hate most comedy in the MCU but this here is the ultimate offender. The jokes are cringe, the "villain" makes no sense, the lead is unlikable. Logically the origin in the pilot makes no sense. The finale pokes fun at how bad this show was all while self praising itself. The reveal at the end goes back to being a cluttered mess.

Spirit Halloween

Spirit Halloween: The Movie is dumb as fuck but loads of fun. It is perfect for the season and and a pure joy to it in regards to Halloween. From the stand by of kids on bikes, to attending horror shows and the struggles of growing up it has alot coming of age moments, mixed in with plenty of tropes(good & bad) that make for a mindless romp. It feels like an episode of Goosebumps and for a flick like this that is all you need.

Beast

Beast is not a bad film, it is a tense & suspenseful film, it just that the suspense doesn't pull you in. I wasn't expecting the Jaws of lion movies but i was atleast expecting The Shallows of lion movies. It is a good survival film but i was never truly invested in this. Solid acting and action scenes but the scenes felt repetitive. Man goes in to jeep, jeep goes in to jungle, lions in the jungle, our lion. Du du, du du du du, salsa lion, i think we're gonna need a bigger boat.

Hellraiser

I trusted David Bruckner to bring both new life to the Hellraiser franchise and to save it from the previous five chapters. This is a great way to do a remake, take the familiar subject with the box, keep the sexual tone, give us more of what we need(Cenobites) and some gnarly gore. It is cut & dry and to the point. I know alot of people that claim to love the first Hellraiser that are bashing this before seeing it, those same people usually think the first film is all Pinhead. If you want Pinhead, you get Pinhead here, and plenty of her.

Werewolf By Night

Michael Giacchino is my favorite TV composer. His Lost score moves me every time. Now he is also the director to add the best touch to the MCU. Werewolf By Night feels inspired and looks beautiful. The cinematography is amazing, the story is tight, the humor(what little there is) actually works, and it is a perfect halloween special.

Deadstream

Deadstream is alot like Followed. Both feature unlikable & obnoxious vloggers exploring a haunted house. Where as Followed featured a douche that was interesting, Deadstream has Stingray from Cobra Kai but without any charm. The film picks up with the introduction of Melanie Stone but once the twist happens it derails again. The final ten minutes is pure Evil Dead goodness, but it is not enough to save this film from feeling like you are watching a tool Youtuber for 90 minutes.
