I Know This Much is True

When i found out Derek Cianfrance was directing an HBO Mini Series i knew it would be bleak. After Blue Valentine and Place Beyond the Pines i knew what to expect but I Know This Much is True might be the bleakest yet. It tackles several issues, mental health, death, prejudice, suicide, and it doesn't shy away from it. Mark Ruffalo gives possibly his best performance here. It isn't a show you'll want to binge cause it isn't a feel good show, it is just a great show.

Scoob

I was indifferent to an animated Scooby Doo, especially a CGI one, but with it being an origin story i was glad it was different than the traditional animation we love. The trailer actually had me interested, i'm not one for animated films in theatre but i planned on seeing this, and with AMC A-List it was a no brainer. Being pulled due to covid and thrown of VOD wasn't a bad idea but with a $20 price tag i steered clear, that is until it landed on HBO Max.  This was a fun flick, nothing great but definitely fun if you want to watch something with your hellspawns and wee lads. If you love old Hanna Barbera there are some cool cross over characters, that alone is worth it in my book.

F is For Family season 4

Every season of F is For Family outdoes the previous, both in terms of overall story and hilarity. This season is super timely for today's political climate. Alright, see you in 2022 season 5.

Da 5 Bloods

Spike Lee has truly returned to form, Blackkklansman brought him back but Da 5 Bloods cements his return to greatness. Excellent cast, amazing soundtrack, perfect balance of flashbacks and present day storytelling with actors not even being de aged. It is about camaraderie but it turns into a full on war film. Spike Lee with a message is the best Spike Lee and here he gets the chance the showcase social issues from the 60s and 70s as well as today.

Artemis Fowl

When this film was first announced i didn't know much of the plot but with Kenneth Branagh directing Murder on the Orient Express i was instantly sold with as much as i loved that flick. Sadly like most of  Kenneth's films, Artemis Fowl is a cluttered, jumbled, messy, ugly, overstuffed and boring film. This may not be the worst film of the year.....but then again it might just be. Drab scenery, unimpressive CGI, dull acting. Artemis Fowl more like Artemis Foul.

Extraction

I had no real reason to watch Extraction but since "comic movie auteurs" The Russo Bros wrote a comic that was then adapted to this, i felt the need to see how their comic vision comes to life through a different directors eyes. Oh, let's also cast Thor himself in the film, just for twerps to assume this is a Russo directed film. The film itself is a muddled and boring mess, soulless and ugly with only a couple of action sequences that are a saving grace, one in particular is pretty sweet but sadly it doesn't save this film.

Solar Opposites

I've seen many overly comparing Solar Opposites with Rick and Morty, and i get it, both have a shared cast, creators, sci fi elements, animation style and irreverent humor but to me this is more of a companion piece. The show for one is hilarious but it has depth, and the ant farm subplot is possibly just as good as the main plot line. One thing that surprised me was the amount of gore on it, this is a splatstick comedy for sci fi animation. It seems rather under the radar at the moment but this has cult tv written all over it.

Bad Education

Cory Finley is 2 for 2, first with the criminally underrated Thoroughbreds and now with Bad Education. Hugh Jackman as usual is great but this film shows the real dramatic chops of an already impressive actress in Geraldine Viswanathan. While this lacks the tension and dark humor of Thoroughbreds it surely continues Finley's record of having excellent casts.

Match of May

Johnny Gargano vs Dominik Dijakovic: NXT
The Elite & Matt Hardy vs The Inner Circle: Stadium Stampede: Double or Nothing
Daniel Bryan vs Drew Gulak: Smackdown
Drake Maverick vs Kushida vs Jake Atlas: NXT
Swerve vs Tyler Breeze: 205 Live

Space Force

The idea of Space Force is perfect, it has the right creative team, the perfect actors and the timely release date. It feels HBO lite but not quite Netflix, it has an over all odd vibe. It is well written and when jokes work they nail it but most of the time it just feels overly dull. Each episode could have used about 10 minutes trimmed and honestly even 10 episodes feels a bit much for this. I enjoyed it enough to watch an episode here or there before bed but honestly i feel like i could have just done anything else.

Legends of Tomorrow

So something odd happened earlier this year, i went back to 2016. See in 2016 i checked out Legends of Tomorrow, i liked it but i did not continue with it. I've never been big on Arrowverse, Arrow i found boring, Flash was corny, Supergirl was boring, Black Lightning felt like a 90s syndicated series, and Batwoman was forced but Legends was fun. Why did i not continue? No idea, i really don't, maybe it didn't have the hook, many shows i will pilot than quit it. We had a fun time for an hour but let's not date, you know the drill. Last year i watched Arrowverse's Else Worlds crossover, it was okay but this year's multiverse crossover opened my eyes. Since they sort of did a soft reboot but merging dimensions i used it as an excuse to start watching Legends again. Sure there is plenty of lore i missed from other seasons but this show is so entertaining with it's fantastic characters, genre swaps and digestable plots. I now feel the need to catch up and see what i missed.
