Godzilla vs Kong

 Godzilla vs Kong was everything i wanted it to be. It is fast paced so the plot doesn't drag, the human characters are likable yet they are secondary here, and the monster aspects are badass. This is the best of WB's Godzilla trilogy, and it might even be better than Skull Island. This is Adam Wingard busting out his Kaiju action figures along with some Johnny Quest toys and having a blast. A neon drenched fantasy that is under two hours, this is basically a perfect summer blockbuster just released in the spring. I can only image how great the scope and sound is in Imax. HBO Max does it again!

Snowpiercer Season 2

 Snowpiercer is one of my favorite films, and the first season was a great retelling of the story. Season 2 was a bit more rough around the edges, alot of it didn't make sense but when the show was kicking ass it truly kicked ass. The finale was everything i wanted the season to be and it set up season three perfectly. Honestly the way the series is going three should be the final season, tie up the loose ends and start their new lives. 

Violation

 Violation on Shudder is a brutal film, it has gore and is in your face but the brutality comes more from why we have the revenge, hence the gore. The brutality comes from rape, but not just rape, it is visceral, it forces you to watch erect cocks and masturbation, and it passes itself off as a film with a message but it all feels a bit much. The dialogue is contrived and pretentious. This film is tedious, dull and a chore to sit through. 

Slaxx

 If you see one film this year about killer jeans, make it Slaxx. When i first read that there was a film about killer jeans and it would be on Shudder i assumed it would by SyFy esque. This is more in line with Rubber, a film about a killer tire, only less pretentious. A vengeful spirit of a sweatshop worker inhabits some denim and unleashes hell on high end fashion employees with superficial values. The ending is bleak and i loved it for that!  

The Snyder Cut

DCEU films need to remain stand alone, cause there is no way that Joss Whedon's Justice League should remain canon. Zack Snyder delivered a 4 hour epic comic book come to life! Told in chapters we get a recap of Batman V Superman, so we know Batman, we know Superman, we remember Wonder Woman, but the film takes its time developing Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman, besides them there is plenty of other DC goodies sprinkled throughout. Some of the battles were in the 2017 cut but they play oh so much better here. I feel like a teen getting to see the Directors Cut or European Cut of Dawn of the Dead for the first time, only here it is almost an entirely different film. No it is not humorless but the humor injected doesn't derail the story or slap you in the face. Way better character dynamics and action this time around. How a 4 hour film flew by faster than the 2 hour version speaks volumes about not just the pacing but the overall product we received. Also i need to bring up Joker.....i love Jared Leto and i am glad he finally portrayed Joker as Joker truly should! Speaking of which, I loved 2019's Joker, the upcoming The Batman looks great, but those are non DCEU, if DCEU continues the SnyderVerse is key! 

The Last Blockbuster

2020 gave us some great docs, mostly wrestling ones like Nail in the Coffin or You Can Not Kill David Arquette, but also film ones like Wolfman's Got Nards, but the one i was most stoked for i have been waiting to buy on VHS but it is now on Netflix so i bit the bullet and watched it, The Last Blockbuster. It is great, there have been several docs on VHS and physical media fandom over the past decade but this one you get a real connection with because you get to know the employees. We get a history lesson of the chain, the rise and fall, before it becomes an underdog story. Stories are told about renting videos or working in video stores, then we get to see the town of Bend, Oregon and it's people. It is beautiful and charming and it is still a goal of mine to go visit. Quite ironic that this is now streaming on Netflix but hopefully the added views will make more people decide to make it a destination as well!
