The Banana Splits Movie

I'll admit i didn't really become aware of the Banana Splits until Kick Ass came out. The catchy tune was great so i looked em up. Hearing there was going to be a R rated horror film based on said property? Fuck yes! It is a fun flick that does a great job at introducing the characters in the first act, and killing them off throughout the rest. This is a fucking bloody flick, and an awesome one at that. This is what i wanted Hell Fest to be, it has a great horror vibe the entire time and feels like a "halloween" movie perfect for this time of year, it is a perfect party movie. If you're a fan of Happy, then this is for you as it is basically the Sonny Shine Show, complete with costumed childrens characters kidnapping and killing. I'd love to see more Hanna Barbera properties get this treatment, c'mon a PG 13 Scooby Doo in a legit haunted house? Even throw in a deleted scene for the dvd of Shaggy toking up! Don't go for blood like this did but keep the fun horror vibe.

The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then Bigfoot

The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then Bigfoot started off awesome, the mood was set with the grizzled boozer with war flashbacks and then cemented in a 3 on 1 fight scene, with a perfect 70s esque title card as the cherry on top. The rest, is a super slow build, the last act is a bit rushed but ultimately it is an enjoyable flick lifted because of Sam Elliot. Just wish it had a bit more character depth without the use of flashbacks, it was good just needed something extra.

The Velocipastor

Many of Wild Eye's films scrape by bare minimum, alot of post 2007 "Grindhouse" films do. Few are as fun and entertaining as the Velocipastor though. Blatantly cheap effects, on the nose cheap ass costumes, a funny script, martial arts, blood and an overall punk vibe make this a underground film lovers dream. It reminds me of a lost Lee Demarbre film, so if you like Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter or Harry Knuckles then this is up your alley.

The Peanut Butter Falcon

When i first read about the Peanut Butter Falcon i was stoked yet weary. A wrestling road movie? Could go either way. Then the trailer dropped and i was sold. The first time i saw it called modern Mark Twain i figured it would become the norm in reviews, which it did, but they weren't wrong. This, Mud, and Kings of Summer are all easily Twain esque. Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson both bring alot of heart, as does Thomas Haden Church but the lead, down syndrome actor Zack Gottsagen steals the show. This is a film about friendship, being free, and following your dream. As for the wrestling aspect, Jim Cornette would either love it or hate it because of the outlaw mudshow promotion that is featured. Wrestling fan or not this is a great film with alot of laughs and heart.

Ready or Not

Radio Silence directed the best segment in V/H/S, they impressed me even more with Southbound. Their feature film debut, Devil's Due was solid but now they created greatness with Ready or Not. Reverse the ritual from the Babysitter and add in the kill or be killed nature of Mayhem and you would get a hell of a Samara Weaving triple feature with this film. It also reminds me quite a bit of You're Next. Great splatstick humor, great macabre humor, effective kills, a sharp script and a fast paced film that really never slows down.

Zombie Tidal Wave

We lived through six anual Sharknados, now Syfy, Ian Ziering & Anthony C Ferrante have re teamed for Zombie Tidal Wave, hoping it is the next tentpole project. That is is not, while it isn't unwatchable, it feels lackluster and it feels forced. Granted the Sharknado series could feel forced at times, it still knew exactly what it was. This however feels like if it wasn't on Syfy, and didn't have Ziering & Ferrante attached that it would be a run of the mill straight to video zombie flick.

Glow Season 3

I don't know if GLOW Season 3 is the best overall season, i think 2 might still hold that spot, but S3 does now have my favorite episode in the series with episode 5. This season had the most character growth but the least amount of wrestling centric storylines. The Vegas setting worked perfectly and the finale left so many options for season 4.

Good Boys

Good Boys is one of the raunchiest yet heart felt films in some time, it is also one of the funniest films in a long time. All three of the lead actors are fucking great as is the supporting cast. There were lines of dialogue being missed and drowned out by audience laughter. Alot of comedies can still be great on a second viewing but they wont be as funny, this one here very well could be if only to hear lines that were missed the first time. Easily the best comedy of the year thus far.

47 Meters Down Uncaged

47 Meters Down was not a good film but it was a dumb film, it was so dumb that is was fun. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, a in name sequel is also not a good film. Much like the first, it too is also dumb but this one isn't very fun, as it never allows itself to be fun. It is a rather boring and repetitive shark flick. I've said it before and i'll say it again, SyFy might be bad but atleast their flicks know what they are. It's bad when SyFy's CGI looks like James Cameron effects compared to this.

The Sword of Trust

Not only is this a wrestling heavy weekend with various events and GLOW season 3, but it is also GLOW's Mark Maron weekend too as i finally saw The Sword of Trust. This is an easy watch, fast paced, funny, great chemistry. The plot is basically what if you found a sword that proved the south won the war, then all these white supremacist want it. When it is funny it is funny, but when it is serious it knows how to build up tension.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

So as a kid i obviously loved horror, most of the shit i watch now i watched back then. I used to read alot of horror books but honestly as a teen i didn't read em as much and shifted more towards books about sex & drugs and all that shit, as well as books on filmmaking and wrestling autobiographies. Few horror books stayed with me, but Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is one i remember digging alot but honestly i haven't read in close to 20 years. The film's trailer didn't do much for me but neither did IT back in 2017 and that is my favorite film of the decade. This is no IT, but fuck a duck,  this is a fun ass horror flick. This is everything i didn't know i needed right now. Likable outcast kids but in the 60s as opposed to the 80s, some Hammer/Universal inspired sets, an overall love of the genre plastered all over, a brief halloween setting. You can tell it was made with heart & passion.

Hobbs & Shaw

How does a franchise go from street racers stealing DVD players from semi trucks, to a buddy cop film where the villain is super powered? Fuck it, it knows what type of film it is. It isn't the best or the most fun of the series, but it has style, plus The Rock and Jason Statham have good chemistry. This film is almost bullet proof from reviews.
