The Kid Who Would Be King

In 2011 Attack the Block blew me away, i waited 8 years, the trailers for The Kid Who Would Be King didn't impress but damn, this was a fun flick. Good cast of kids, cool imagery, super fast paced action, easily my second favorite King Arthur film after Holy Grail....it isn't really my thing but i did the history regardless. I just hope it isn't another 8 years for another Joe Cornish film.

The Good Place

Season one of this show was great, season 2 was even better, season 3.....cemented it as the best sitcom on tv. It is bonkers & hilarious like Community, and it is refreshing to love a FUNNY sitcom, cause most sitcoms are not funny. Louie, Atlanta, those are dramas in disguise. And holy hell, JANET, Darcy Bethy Carden....best acting on a sitcom in....maybe ever?! The episode where she portrays everyone was purely and simply brilliant! And that finale....heartfelt as fuck, yo!

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich

I had to update my top 50 of the year, i added in favorite animation in order to take away SpiderVerse(a perfect film) in order to put in this, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. The best in the franchise since the first? Perhaps the best in the franchise, period. This is how more low budget horror should be, it is light and fun yet not overly comedic, dark yet not overly serious. Plus it has tits, tits in horror is an important thing! Speaking of important things in horror, it is loaded with gore, really good gore. I had given up hope for this series but S. Craig Zahler(Brawl in Cell Block 99) brought a fresh script and the directors of Wither created a sharp film with a likable cast of characters.

Glass

While no where near as good as Unbreakable and Split, i quite enjoyed Glass. Each act feels different, we get a 90s esque psychological thriller, act 2 has the deranged mental hospital, and the last act we get an X Men film. It has flaws and has a few pacing issues but dammit if James McAvoy doesn't captivate,  this is truly his film once again!

Replicas

Replicas is a film starring Keanu Reeves, trying to be Nicholas Cage but giving odd deliveries along with everyone else in the film. Reeves keeps your attention, the rest of the cast, while it is well put together, brings nothing to the table. The plot makes  no sense, but you know what? I had a good time with it. I love bad movies, now i might not have loved this, but i'd be down to watch it with friends and some beer or at midnight and to mock it.

Escape Room

It isn't the first great film of 2019, but it is the first fun film of 2019. Escape Room isn't anything grand, but it is a good time,  it borrows from films like Hellraiser, Saw & Cabin in the Woods, no i'm not comparing it to them, just simply saying there is inspiration. In fact that our nods to a few horror flicks in it. But if you want a dumb & fun flick, then go smoke a bowl, buy yourself some candy and enjoy it.

Death Kiss

Remember around the time of Death Wish 4  when Charles Bronson did a string of Death Wish esque films? Or atleast were marketed as such? Well what is one got made, but now a days, and it starred a man that looked just like Bronson? Well, that is what this is, and it is honestly a blast. It has right wing politics which seem to be done tongue in cheek, but with Danny Baldwin it is hard to say. Regardless this was a fun send up of Bronsonploitation films, it has heart, it feels cheap, but the heart & the cheapness work well in this field.

Assassination Nation

So i saw this months ago, posted this to Facebook but never did on here.

Assassination Nation is a a funny, disturbing, gory, beautifully shot, perfectly scored masterpiece of social & political satire! As it stands, easily my favorite film of the year. Hyper kinetic chaos mixed with gorgeous colors and oh so perfectly shot! This seems like a film destined for cult status but fuck a duck if it isn't an important film for people to see

The Mule

I never got to see The 15:17 to Paris, it looked awful and the reviews did it no favors. Was my Eastwod kick finally up? Yep! Then along came the Mule, the trailer looked great but again reviews weren't favorable, but still 40 some percent better than 15:17. The Mule is in my opinion his best film since American Sniper, if not Gran Torino. Much like Torino it involves a racist with a heart of gold, but instead of being a quasi vigilante film it is a drug film. Great cast, great soundtrack, and a great flick.

Bandersnatch

It dawned on me last night that i had seen 30 films from 2018 for the first time in the month of December. If only i had 31, a film a day....then i kept seeing folks say that Black Mirror's Bandersnatch was a film, and holy shit, it hit my 31 mark! The film is a total gimmick but what a ride, i loved choose your own adventure books as a kid, so lets base a choose your own adventure film about the making of a choose your own adventure game based on a choose your own adventure book, and lets drip it with conspiracy theories, psychedelic drugs and throw in a damn fine soundtrack. A soundtrack you can change, drugs you can or can not take, theories that could easily be avoided. Bravo netflix, bravo Black Mirror, this was a cool experiment.
