Rick & Morty Season 4

Season 4 of Rick and Morty has divided people. It seems newer Rick and Morty fans found it too weird, old fans thought they tried too hard. The show has always been weird so that is welcome. The season was full of sci fi goodness, gore, some great twist and overall the best season since season 2.

Run

HBO's Run at 7 episodes is a quick watch. Each episode moves at a fast pace, has great dark humor and the entire cast shines. You go on a roller coaster with the layers of our two leads and it boils down to a finale that is open ended. If it comes back i would love it, but if it ends, then it ended perfectly.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War

The newest Justice League Dark has had fan boys oozing, claiming it is epic and that it puts Endgame to shame. Well Endgame was far from the end all be all so if that is epic this is kids stuff. There are great ideas here, a fantastic voice cast, and cool imagery and battles but the plot is out the window. DC has been way more miss than hit lately, especially non Batman titles editions. Granted yes he is a main character here, but these ensembles have been meh. Bring on the Snyder Cut!

The Lovebirds

The Lovebirds is far from the greatness that was Michael Showalter's The Big Sick but it was a fast paced and fun comedic mystery. Not all the jokes land but when they do they're pretty damn funny. It helps that there is great chemistry to keep the film going. It has the total vibe of a comedy you'd flip around and see on TBS or FX and it honestly reminded me alot of the underrated Game Night. Hopefully since this fell victim to Covid and went to Netflix that it atleast finds an audience.

Have a Good Trip

The idea of Have a Good Trip was good enough, celebs talking about tripping balls, but the fact there is animation and reenactments makes it even better, and a bit nostalgic! Rob Corddry as Paul Scheer is pure gold!

The Simpsons Season 31

Another year, another season of the Simpsons. Another years of folks saying it sucks(even though they haven't watched in years), another year of the Simpsons proving people wrong. This was a fantastic season, better than last year(which granted was more spotty) i just hope when this show ends, it ends on a high note!

Arkansas

Arkansas, the feature film debut of Clark Duke, is a film that is getting so unfairly trashed. If you love films about dimwits in the crime game then this is for you. This is not Fargo, but if you love that, or Hell or High Water, 2 Days in the Valley, Mud, then check this out. Duke knocks it out here, it has a down and dirty southern vibe, a great score and all the acting is top notch. Modern day Vince Vaughn is the best Vince Vaughn, with this, Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete the dude has redefined himself. This film balances dark humor with brutality perfectly, can't wait to see what is next from Duke!

How to Build a Girl

How To Build a Girl starts off as a cute, whimsical and charming coming of age story, and it ends that way too, but in between all of that is a film about the rise and fall of someone getting too much success, too soon at too young of an age. The showcase of music snobs and all their negativity is on full display, and the character types are highly recognizable. Beanie Feldstein one again delivers another awesome and awkward performance after last year's Booksmart, but this puts her on a new level. I have not seen any other Coky Giedroyc films but after this i will right that wrong.

Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge

Kudos to Warner Bros Animation for making a bloody and violent Mortal Kombat movie. Scorpion's Revenge is non stop badassery from the first scene, blood, skulls, brains all in the first 10 minutes. From there it is part origin story but only in introduction, this cuts right to the chase and throws the characters into battle. With the DC and now this WB Animation is killing it in the direct to video cartoon market. Also Joel McHale is a perfect Johnny Cage.

Vivarium

2020 has already had some odd films, but Vivarium is perhaps the oddest. This is Twilight Zone by the way of David Lynch, sprinkled with some great satire and commentary. Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg both continue to take on outside the box roles, and this here gives both layers as we see them descend into madness, pkus the child actor, Senan Jennings is creepy as hell. Fuck suburbia!

Valley Girl

Dear fuck, why? I am not opposed to remakes but Valley Girl? Is there a market for it? No. And it is a VOD film? Losing more of your audience. But, but, but it is different, this one if a juke box musical.....okay, i'm sold. But wait, the musical numbers are beyond awful, terribly choreographed and ruin, yes ruin, great songs. I'm sorry the original songs are still there but these covers are like Glee. Jessica Rothe reprises her character from the first Happy Death Day but instead of dying again and again, we die again and again.

The Jesus Rolls

When i first heard about The Jesus Rolls, years ago, i was stoked. Then the trailer dropped, i was still stoked but felt underwhelmed. I still needed to see the film but i found myself losing interest, and after reading reviews i feared the worst. A 22 year later sequel/spin off? This could go so wrong, but honestly i had a great time with this. Great chemistry, some hilarious and shocking moments help tie together such a random script. Scenes happen just to happen and it is a fever dream of a story that may not live up to the Big Lebowski's greatness or even come close but for hardcore fans this could form a cult within a cult.

Porno

Porno, yes that is the name of a movie, is a fun yet uneven film. A likable cast of characters, some excellent gore and cool psychedelia but the plot is a bit jumbled in the last act. If it had just been a film about a killer in the theatre or a cursed film it might have had a better direction but overall it a fast paced and enjoyable film.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist isn't for everyone, even if you love musicals you might find some of the song choices to be lackluster. Songs aside the choreography is great, but the show's real strength comes from the characters and the the heart of the series. Terrific acting and compelling stories lead the a fantastic finale with the best musical number of the entire season!
