Beavis & Butthead

The latest season of Beavis & Butthead is a continued welcome addition to last year's return. From being zen to sweet Loraine. More Old Beavis & Old Butthead goodness to dumb jokes about egg on your face that actually feel brilliant here. From whatever letter B is to a touching tale of friendship. Growing your own tobacco to marriage. Electroshock scoring to rabies. Looking for "jobs" to Florida. Stomping ketchup to vasectomies. Service to breeding. Hoarding to playing Enter Sandman on your face. Ciabatta zones to jobs with benefits. Daria to Boing. I love when there are 12 episodes of a series but this is one i wish had 24, hell i'll even take a split season. It moves so quick and is such an easy & hilarious watch.

Dial of Destiny

Dial Of Destiny is a blast. The action scenes might be the best in the Indiana Jones saga since Temple of Doom, they happen often and feel like old school action sequences. For a film over 2 hours, it moves at a quick pace. The cast is great, Harrison Ford plays Old Man Indy in a slow and disgruntled way, Phoebe Waller Bridge plays her tweener role with a dash of seduction and a wink of sarcasm, even bit players get time to shine. The final act takes a big left turn and while contrived it is quite bonkers. The ending is a bit Kiss Kiss Bang Bang but wraps up everything nicely. James Mangold has now given swan songs to Indy, Professor X(well at the time) and Wolverine(see Professor X).

The Doom That Came to Gotham

Everyone these days seems to love HP Lovecraft and Cthulhu, Mike Mignola is highly respected, and Batman is a go to for all. So when WB took a Mignola story and fully embraced the promotion of Lovecraftian horror, fans were loving it. I like Lovecraft but i'm not the type to jizz over anything related, i just wanted a pulpy tale like Soul of the Dragon, but instead i got a dull story that finally picked up in the last 10 minutes. DC Animation is a chore, i say it alot but dammit, i will keep watching.

Somebody i Used to Know

Dave Franco impressed me a few years ago with The Rental, so i was for sure going to check out his latest, Somebody I Used to Know. Add in Alison Brie and Kiersey Clemons, two of my crushes, along with Brie reuniting with her study group cohort Danny Pudi and i was sold. The film feels like something i wished i could have seen at an art house but instead it being on Amazon made it feel less like a quirky indie rom com and more like a typical streamer film, It did have its moments, all the acting is solid even if situations feel forced and characters are cringe, like these feel like people i could know but that are pretty despicable. We do get Brie & Clemons nude and we see a kiss so that is nice!

Air

Air is Ben Affleck's best film after Argo. He nails these biopics/historical films, and here we see the "underdog" of Nike land their deal with Michael Jordan. Affleck & Matt Damon as usual have great chemistry, Viola Davis, Chris Tucker, and Jason Bateman are all fantastic as well! Even if you're not a sneakerhead or basketball fan, the story here is captivating as hell.

Unwelcome

I don't know what the fuck i just watched. Shudder's latest, Unwelcome is both a welcome and Unwelcome film. It is bonkers as fuck but bonkers isn't always good. I had no idea what was happening, and that isn't a bad thing it's just it felt jumbled. The first act is all over the place then we get new characters and while the intent was mean spirited for them it still felt like punishment for the audience. Then we get the goblins and holy fuck is that insane, in fact the last ten minutes is like Hausu only thing is the last act is the only memorable part i feel. While not technically good per se it is still an entertaining film.

Asteroid City

The last few live action Wes Anderson films have had people call his work Anderson unhinged, but Asteroid City truly is. This story much like Grand Budapest Hotel and French Dispatch is multi layered but here it is super meta, and besides that the last act(and you legit know the acts here) is his most bonkers work yet. For me his films are masterworks and events and this here is Wes Anderson at his most Wes Anderson!

The Flash

The Flash is probably my favorite non James Gunn comic book film since Joker. Andy Muschietti & Gunn will be a perfect match with Brave & The Bold, both use soundtracks greatly. I could have done without some of the jokes but appreciated that it incorporated some dark humor. Once we get nuts it gets pretty pulpy and even feels like an EC comic at times. The dual Barrys work great, Sasha Calle is a total babe as Kara, Michael Keaton is gleeful! We get some great cameos, one of which really popped me. As well as some great easter eggs about some other bits of film history. THere is alot of heart here, especially in the final act and that is one thing that was missing from the start of the Snyderverse. The plot moves quick and feels very Snyderverse in the first act, which feels intentional. By time it ends it doesn't really set up TroGunnVille but it does a hell of a job doing Infinite Earths/Flashpoint as a swan song for this clustered franchised. With as great as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were i am stoked for Gunn's DC!

Rise of the Beast

Growing up i had some Transformers toys and watched the show sparingly but most of my knowledge came from a certain crossover comic. Then Beast Wars came out and it was pretty sweet, the animation was something unheard of at that time. The films have all been pretty bad but Bumblebee was awesome so add in the Beasts and i was sold on Rise of the Beasts. The film is alot of fun, the humor is lightly sprinkled and it actually works plus it doesn't derail the story. The action scenes have improved since the Bay films, the final battle reminded me of Endgame. But honestly the best part of it is the human characters, much like in Bumblebee you actually can invest into them here. Pretty damn solid shut off your mind, relax and float down stream blockbuster.

Brooklyn 45

Brooklyn 45 is an interesting film where it begins as a seance, and becomes a almost a murder mystery like Clue, only without being a comedy and with no murder. Paranoia, mistrust and secrets add to the tension with some pretty solid acting.

Sanctuary

I love indie films that tackle kink. Here we get a film about a dominatrix that has a rich client that enjoys being bossed around and having no contact sex. It is portrayed very well and has some damn fine acting. I love that it has two actors and one setting, and it is a roller coaster ride of a game of cat & mouse. What is a shoot, what is a work? It keeps you guessing the entire time. It's a bit tedious and i wish it had been an episode of Room 104 instead but it's crafted well enough to not have any major complains, plus the ending is morbidly sweet.

Across the Spiderverse

It's a bit more overstuffed than the first but the characters, action scenes & imagery continue to make the Spiderverse series a figure collectors wet dream......or atleast it should be. Here we get new variants, too many variants, returning favorites but ones that feel like shells of their former selves and some multiversal twists that over convolute things. Add in new dynamics, morale, & dilemmas and you could have an interesting story, it just never takes off and proceeds to drag for 2.5 hours. Is it overly long? Yes but it still flows surprisingly well during some action scenes, just could have used some trimming to make it a little less boring. Even more than the first it feels like a fever dream done at breakneck speed. Ending it on a different note is the perfect part 2 formula and leaves you wanting more, i just wasn't fully invested until the end, i just hope the third doesn't feel as stuffed.
